Huawei Assists TIM in Constructing the World’s First G.653-based 100G WDM Network

Shenzhen, China, February 6, 2013: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, recently announced that it had successfully assisted TIM, a leading operator in Brazil, in constructing the world’s first coherent 100G WDM network based on the G.653 optical fiber. It is also one of the first 100G WDM networks in Latin America.

TIM’s current core networks are currently 10G and 40G WDM. As new services appear on operators’ agenda and grow rapidly, such as FTTx, UMTS, and LTE, the core network will become increasingly strained. The limitations of a 10G WDM networks make the upgrade to 100G networks particularly urgent. The G.653 optical fiber (also called dispersion shifted fiber) used on TIM’s current networks is different from the G.652 optical fiber. Featuring strong non-linear effects such as four-wave mixing (FWM), the G.653 optical fiber is not compatible with long-haul WDM systems due to technical constraints.

With expertise in high-speed transport networks, Huawei has developed advanced technologies to overcome these long-haul constraints. These technologies include modulation format technologies, non-linearity suppression algorithms, and PMD compensation algorithms. Relying on these technologies, Huawei effectively addresses the constraints of the G.653 optical fiber, such as sensitivity to non-linear effects and large polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Consequently, long-haul (over 1000 kilometers) transmission of 100G signals can be achieved. The experience that TIM and Huawei have obtained in deploying this 100G WDM network will go a long way to inspire confidence for constructing 100G WDM networks across Latin America.

To date, Huawei’s 100G solutions have served over 50 operators from more than 40 countries and regions, including Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Asian-Pacific region. Huawei is indisputably leading the global commercial application of 100G networks currently, having constructed 100G networks over 100,000 kilometers in length; greater than the Earth’s circumference!

Huawei is committed to providing customers worldwide with the most advanced transport network solutions. According to Ovum, an industry-leading consultancy firm, Huawei ranks first in the global optical network, WDM/OTN, and 40G/100G markets, as of Q3 2012.
