Champion ONE Creates Paradigm Shift In The Telecom Industry With Its New uTune™ Director By Completely Eliminating The Need to Spare Fixed Channel DWDM Optical Transceivers

New Innovation From Champion ONE Allows Network Engineers To Tune DWDM Pluggable Transceivers Prior To Plugging Them Into Their Network Equipment

BEACHWOOD, Ohio – September 12, 2012 – As the leading 3rd party optical transceiver company in the industry, Champion ONE announced today the launch of its new uTune™ Director.  A unique appliance used to tune tunable dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) XFP pluggable transceivers and lock the channel so the transceiver can be used as a fixed channel DWDM solution.  This patent pending technology creates the ability for network operators to reduce their investment in sparing requirements for fixed channel DWDM networks and instantly turn up a new DWDM circuit, potentially saving millions of dollars for network operators while increasing network responsiveness.

Prior to this disruptive innovation, telecom and datacom network operators who “light” fixed channel XFP based DWDM networks were forced to spare every channel deployed.  Since DWDM networks can support up to 40 channels at 100GHz spacing and 80 channels at 50GHz spacing, the sparing requirements can be significant.  For example, the list price of DWDM XFPs from switch vendors can approach $20,000; at 80 channels, this equates to $1.6M in sparing costs. However, this ongoing burden is now virtually eliminated with the uTune Director. Replacing 80 fixed channel XFP DWDM spares with a single uTune Director and one Champion ONE tunable DWDM XFP for less than $7,000 allows for immediate, measurable savings. When applied across multiple networks, service providers can save millions of dollars in infrastructure expenses that can be redeployed to support future network growth.

The uTune Director is a one-of-a-kind, external appliance, smaller than the size of a college textbook with a built-in LCD and both XFP and SFP+ ports.  The Director is a completely standalone device that does not require a PC or network connection.  The Director utilizes an included external 120V AC power adapter.  Once tuned in the uTune Director, the tunable optic is removed and deployed into an XFP transceiver port. Additionally, the optic can be retuned at anytime.  The uTune Director provides tuning for up to 50GHz channel spacing for maximum network support.

By placing the uTune Director in labs, warehouses, and other sparing facilities, and inventorying a single tunable XFP, telecom and datacom providers can completely eliminate the ongoing need to spare every channel at each location.  This in return, generates an immediate measurable savings.  In addition, this technology can be used to instantly turn up new DWDM circuits to meet customer demand and generate additional revenue.

“The ability to utilize a uTune Director in one’s sparing operations has an instantaneous return on investment for the service provider customer.  Also by maintaining a pair or more of tunable DWDM optics, service providers will enable faster customer turn ups and improve their competitive positioning,” said Charlie Weinberger, Champion ONE President.

Champion ONE’s uTune Director currently supports tuning the DWDM XFP form factor.  Champion ONE plans to release SFP+ tuning capability for the uTune Director in the near future.
