WESTFORD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Sonus Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:SONS, news, filings), a global leader in SIP communications, today announced that Telenet, the largest provider of broadband cable services in Belgium, has selected the Sonus SBC 5100 Session Border Controller (SBC) to unify SIP communications for the cable operator’s approximately 2,000 employees.

Telenet currently has 2.1 million service subscribers and offers Triple Play services (voice/video/high-speed Internet) to residential and business customers in Belgium and Luxembourg. The Belgian cable operator selected the Sonus SBC 5100 for its unique scalability (which is approximately 2X that of competitive mid-sized SBCs) and powerful media transcoding. The Sonus SBC 5100 will be deployed in Telenet’s internal network as the centerpiece of a new SIP trunking solution that is expected to help the cable provider lower its operating expenses by eliminating costly PRI trunks, reducing its internal long-distance phone charges and simplifying its network management.

Telenet will also leverage the Sonus SBC 5100 to consolidate its communications by connecting with its existing Private Branch eXchange (PBX) and Microsoft® Lync™ systems.

The Sonus SBC 5100 was introduced in May 2012 as a mid-sized SBC that targets the 250 to 10,000 session market. The Sonus SBC 5100 is purpose-built to leverage SIP-based networks as tier two/three service providers and enterprises look to simplify their infrastructure and deploy video and Unified Communications features.

The Sonus SBC portfolio, which also includes the higher-density Sonus SBC 5200, provides communications service providers and enterprises with a consistent set of robust communications features, including built-in media transcoding, intelligent session routing, advanced SIP message manipulation and complete network security.

Telenet’s selection of the Sonus SBC 5100 marks a new milestone in a relationship that began in 2008 when the company chose the Sonus SBC 9000 for its SIP trunking needs. The Sonus SBC 9000 provides SIP trunking services to Telenet’s business customers and will connect directly with the Sonus SBC 5100 as Telenet’s own gateway to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

Quotes:

“We’ve been very pleased with the performance of Sonus’ solutions as the SIP trunking platform for our business customers, so Sonus was the obvious choice when it came time to adopt SIP trunking for our own business,” said Sonja De Ganck, Manager of Telephony Service Engineering at Telenet. “The Sonus SBC 5100 delivered all of the features we needed — interoperability with our current communications systems, media transcoding, security and scalability in a package that is easy to use, simple to manage and uncomplicated to deploy.”

“The Sonus SBC 5100 delivers the scalability and feature-rich functionality of the Sonus SBC platform in a solution that makes sound financial sense for mid-sized enterprises,” said David Tipping, Sonus Vice President and General Manager, SBC Business. “It is the right technology at the right size for companies like Telenet that need to reduce costs, streamline their network management and unify their SIP-based Unified Communications.”
