FairPoint Continues Network Upgrades in Vermont

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (August 15, 2012) – FairPoint Communications continues to invest heavily in its Vermont network, now adding greater speeds and growth opportunities at 20 of its central office switching centers.

“We continue to take the lead in bringing broadband Internet to Vermonters, including boosting growth and speed in areas where demand is especially strong,” said Mike Smith, Vermont state president for FairPoint. “With nearly a $100 million investment in our network and 1,100 miles of new fiber in Vermont, FairPoint is wiring the Green Mountain State with next-generation technology.”

The network upgrades include VantagePoint Ethernet high-speed equipment additions to these communities, enabling more customers to achieve the full speed potential of the next-generation network. This deployment will allow residential customers in these markets to qualify for higher broadband speeds – up to 15M, based on distance.

More than 69,000 customer lines will benefit from the effort including those served by central offices in Barre, Bennington, Brattleboro, Essex Junction, Fairfax, Greensboro, Jeffersonville, Johnson, Middlebury, Milton, Montpelier, Plainfield, Randolph, Rutland, St. Johnsbury, Stowe, Swanton, Troy, Vergennes, White River Junction and Winooski.

Upgrades are also underway in additional communities in Vermont.

Building the most robust and versatile network across the region is crucial to handle the increasing demands for bandwidth, Smith said.

According to Cisco, global IP traffic increased eightfold over the five years leading up to 2010 and will quadruple by 2015, hitting 966 exabytes (nearly one zettabyte) for the full year. That will be the equivalent of all movies ever made crossing IP networks every four minutes.

“FairPoint’s network and Carrier Ethernet services are versatile enough to fit the needs of any business customer,” Smith said. “It’s why so many regional banks, health care facilities, schools and government entities continue to count on us.”

FairPoint provides residential speed options up to 15Mbps, while business customers can customize their connections with speeds as fast as 1 Gbps.
