Zayo Announces Focus on Small Cell

LOUISVILLE, Colo. – June 19, 2012 – Zayo Group announced the formation of a dedicated team focused on Small Cell and Fiber to the Tower (FTT) initiative.  The team will be reporting to Matt Erickson, President of Zayo Fiber Solutions.  Small Cells, which are smaller antennas that attach to lamp posts, buildings and other aspects of the urban landscape, are utilized to enhance the mobile network reach for Wireless Providers.

Small Cell deployments require deep fiber footprints to cost effectively provide the infrastructure layer.  Zayo currently has over 50 fiber-dense metro markets, and with the pending acquisition of AboveNet will enable other tier 1 markets such as New York, San Francisco and Houston.  Currently, Zayo provides the underlying infrastructure for Small Cell service in three metropolitan markets and has more than 100 Small Cell locations on-net.

Zayo has appointed David Dunn, an experienced Business Development executive to lead the efforts.  Mr. Dunn will lead the team committed to making Zayo’s fiber footprint available for Small Cell deployment, actively identify locations where zoning permits and real estate regulations allow for Small Cell and bring Zayo’s Small Cell offering to market.

“The growth in Small Cell deployment creates a substantial growth opportunity for Zayo,” states Matt Erickson, President of Zayo Fiber Solutions.  “We are currently engaged in discussions with wireless carriers, tower companies, telecom providers, DAS companies, and wireless equipment manufacturers to provide dark fiber solutions to support of small cell deployments.”

Currently, Zayo is the leader in the competitive telecommunications space for Fiber to the Tower (FTT) and recently reported over 3,500 towers on-net or under construction.  Zayo will continue to build on its expertise in FTT, where they have been providing turn-key lit and dark solutions for Wireless providers at Macro sites, and apply it to Small Cell deployment.

According to Cisco’s 2012 VNI Report, North American mobile data demand is forecasted to increase 75% per year between 2011 and 2016.  Given this explosion in data needs, Zayo expects Small Cell to be a key area of growth.
