Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation invites new applications for funding and support

  • APPLICATIONS INVITED FROM INITIATIVES AIMING TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
  • WINDOW FOR NEW APPLICATIONS IS 10th APRIL – 25th JUNE 2012
  • PROJECTS ALREADY BENEFITTING FROM FUNDING INCLUDE AN ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR DISABLED YOUTH AND TALKING SMARTPHONE APPS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND BLIND PEOPLE

London, 10 April 2012: Cable&Wireless Worldwide today announced that it is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding and support from the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation. With the aim of enhancing the lives of those with special needs through communications expertise, the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation provides assistance through project partnerships, the purchase of essential equipment or for awareness and campaigning purposes. Applications will be accepted from 10th April until 25th June 2012.

This is the second year in which the Foundation has provided expertise and financial assistance. Previously supported projects include Whizz-Kidz, a charity aiming to help young disabled people lead fun, independent and active lives. With funding from the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation, Whizz-Kidz is now extending its online community to include critical resources such as training, work placement opportunities and social interaction features.

Another funding recipient, Communication for Blind and Disabled People, is creating a suite of applications for smartphones that will help blind people to travel outside of their homes. The applications being developed links the nervous blind traveller with spoken navigation, remote emergency help and publically available travel information helping them to complete unfamiliar journeys safely.

“We are delighted to open the second round of applications for funding,” says Tracy O’Brien, Cable&Wireless Worldwide Chairman of the Foundation. “Already, we have helped organisations such as Whizz-Kidz and Communication for Blind and Disabled People to improve accessible means of communicating. We hope to use our expertise and funding to help many more organisations make a real difference to the people they support.”
