Sprint Recommends Four Ways to Use 4G and Survive “Carmageddon” in Los Angeles July 16-17

Sprint customers have mobile tools to make sure this weekend’s potential traffic nightmare is not the end of the world;

Tweet your photo and caption about your experience; enter to win an HTC EVO™ 3D

LOS ANGELES (BUSINESS WIRE), July 15, 2011 – Carmageddon,” also known as this weekend’s shutdown of the heavily congested 405 freeway between the 10 and the 101 in Los Angeles, does not mean that it’s the end of the world for Sprint 4G customers. Thanks to the wide selection of 4G devices from Sprint (NYSE:S, news, filings) and an abundance of apps available for download, Angelenos can check traffic and public transportation using GPS, find alternate routes (besides Sepulveda), share photos, videos and horror stories to social networking and blog sites, host impromptu backyard picnics with a wide range of recipes at one’s fingertips, and play a variety of games in 2D and 3D.

To commemorate this event, Sprint invites mobile phone users to submit a photo and caption on Twitter of an activity or observation about the 405 freeway closure between the 10 and the 101 in Los Angeles, include the hashtag #Sprint4G and enter to win a new HTC EVO™ 3D.

Here are four ways to make the weekend more manageable using your Sprint 4G mobile device:

1) Use GPS: Sprint Navigation, a preloaded application on many Sprint mobile devices, will allow you to check alternate routes and see traffic delays. Also, you can use Sprint Navigation to check for nearby restaurants if you are stuck in an unfamiliar part of town and need to grab a bite.1
2) Share your experience: Upload videos, photos and other observations using social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook that are readily available on Sprint 4G devices such as the HTC EVO™ 3D and Nexus S 4G™2. HTC EVO™ 3D takes the mobile multimedia experience to a new level, providing the ability to capture and view in 3D and share at 4G speeds while offering consumers the ultimate glasses-free 3D experience.
3) Host an impromptu backyard picnic: It’s easy to spontaneously organize a BBQ or block party using recipe and cooking apps from Android Market. Gayle Peck from Peck Media, Woodland Hills, Calif., said, “I plan to host a backyard picnic for neighbors who don’t want to travel that weekend and I might just use my Sprint mobile phone to find good recipes if we are down to the last minute.” For example, try Recipe Search, a reverse recipe finder app. The user simply speaks the ingredients they have in their refrigerator or pantry and will see a display of meals with directions that they could cook. You don’t even have to get in the car to go to the store! Sprint 4G will deliver results quicker.
Epicurious is another comprehensive cooking application for recipe hungry mobile users. This app includes more than 28,000 professionally tested recipes created from renowned cooking magazines, popular cookbooks, top chefs and leading restaurants. Both apps are free in Android Market.
4) Need to kill some time (while not driving)? Download and play a variety of games. Feel angry? You know what game to play…Angry Birds! Instead of getting in the car and driving in Carmageddon traffic, play the free Asphalt 5 game on your Android device and race with the fastest dream cars ever created by some of the most prestigious manufacturers in the world. Also, the new Sprint 4G tablet will come in handy this weekend. The HTC EVO View 4G is the perfect combination e-reader, media player and portable computing device. HTC EVO View 4G offers a premium entertainment experience with HD-like quality video and a rich web-browsing experience with the ability to browse the web on Flash-enabled sites.

“The most important thing to remember this weekend is stay cool and stay safe,” said Kevin Kunkel, Sprint vice president-West region, “Please no texting while driving – even if you are trapped in a traffic jam for miles – and remember to use your hands-free device while driving, even if you are driving very slowly behind a million other frustrated motorists.” Kunkel also recommends checking out the two videos that show the deployment of 4G in Los Angeles.
