Interxion Reduces CO2 Emissions by 94%

Use of 100% renewable energy reduces Interxion’s CO2 emissions from 3,000 tonnes a year to 170

ZURICH 5 July 2011INTERXION HOLDING NV, (NYSE:INXN, news), a leading European provider of carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, today announced that its Swiss data centre has taken another step forward in reducing its carbon footprint by signing up to 100% green energy.

Since January 2011, Interxion Switzerland has been using the energy product “Aquastrom”. Aquastrom means hydroelectricity and is supplied by local energy provider Energie Opfikon AG. The “Aquastrom” product sources its energy purely from hydroelectric power, which is produced using naturally flowing water, rather than originating from pumped-storage plants – this is backed up by the energy producer’s proof of origin and is checked on a regular basis by independent auditors.

Since signing up to the scheme Interxion has reduced its CO2 emissions from 3,000 tonnes to 170 tonnes per year, representing a decrease of 94% and, in turn, exceeding the international target of 20%.

Interxion’s Zurich data centre has also signed up to energy product “opfi.wassertop” for its recently completed expansion. The product is also provided by Energie Opfikon and provides power from both solar and hydroelectricity. It is certified by “naturemade basic”, which is the quality mark for ecologically produced energy. Electricity products that carry the naturemade star label must meet the strict conditions and high environmental standards of VUE (Association for Environmentally Friendly Electricity), and are also subject to stringent quality control procedures.

“This announcement further reflects our commitment to the green agenda and puts us ahead of the game when it comes to ongoing political discussions around the reduction of CO2 emissions,” said Eddy Van den Broeck, Managing Director of Interxion (Schweiz) AG.

“We have been impressed by Interxion’s endeavour,” states Hans-Peter Ruf, Managing Director of Energie Opfikon AG. “We are delighted that Interxion has chosen our Aquastrom and opfi.wassertop energy products. I believe that the opportunity to work together with a leading, large-scale consumer of our energy such as Interxion confirms both the need for action and an increased focus on sustainability,” added Ruf.

“For us, a commitment in the area of emissions reduction means much more than just sourcing renewable energy,” stated Van den Broeck. “Since 1 January 2011, all data centre services from Interxion Switzerland have carried the myclimate ‘climate-neutral’ label. Furthermore, Interxion is the first data centre in Switzerland to compensate for 100% of its CO2 emissions.”
