With World IPv6 Day just around the corner, new statistics have revealed an increase in adoption of IPv6 across the world. Ten percent of the global Internet’s Autonomous Systems or Routable Core Networks are now fully IPv6 enabled. 50 percent of the well-connected service providers are also IPv6 enabled. An announcement in this regard has been made by Hurricane Electric (News – Alert). The organization is the largest IPv6-native Internet backbone and colocation provider in the world.
In a release, Mike Leber, president of Hurricane Electric said, “The IPv6 train has left the station. We’re pleased to see that global IPv6 adoption is on the rise, and I urge every ISP and enterprise to move forward with their IPv6 transition. Enterprises that delay the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will eventually experience connectivity-related issues and financial losses.”
The Regional Internet Registries or RIRs had received the last five blocks of IPv4 addresses from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority or IANA in February. The Asia Pacific Network Information Center or APNIC ran out of conventionally allocated IPv4 addresses in April. Similarly by October 2011, the American Registry of Internet Numbers or ARIN (News – Alert), which is the American counterpart of APNIC, is expected to run out of its supply of IPv4 addresses.
Apart from strong ROI, IPv6 will also provide tremendous long-term benefits. IPv6 adoption will result in ongoing benefits worth $10 billion/year to the global economy. This information has been provided by a US Commerce Department study. A number of other benefits are also offered by IPv6. Apart from increased address space, IPv6 will also provide improved network-layer security and simplified network configuration.
Free IPv6 certification is offered by Hurricane Electric. The company also offers DNS services and tunnel broker services. A Professional Services Division was formed by Hurricane Electric in March. This division will help enterprises prepare for the transition to IPv6 in a cost-effective manner.
