Verizon to Highlight the Intersection of IT and Health Care at HIMSS 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. – Verizon will highlight the powerful intersection of IT and health care at HIMSS 2011 in booth 931.

Taking place from Monday through Thursday (Feb. 21-24) at the Orange County Convention Center, HIMSS is the largest annual gathering of key stakeholders across the U.S. health care ecosystem, including IT providers, health care systems, practitioners, pharmaceutical-biotechnology companies, insurers and policy makers.

Verizon will showcase how the pragmatic use of technology can advance health IT to help improve patient outcomes, control health care costs and expand access to quality care through a range of solutions, including telehealth, health data management and exchanges, universal medical identities, and industry-specific wireless devices and applications.

Verizon’s top security and healthcare technology expert, Dr. Peter Tippett, will deliver a featured “Views From the Top” address (Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 9:45 a.m., Theater Room #320) titled “Prescriptions for Health IT: What’s Holding Us Back.” Tippett, Verizon’s vice president, security and industry solutions practices, will assess the current state of U.S. health IT and highlight key transformational elements needed to drive change.

“The U.S. health care delivery system is on the cusp of transformational change,” Tippett said. “By working together as an industry to develop the framework necessary to foster collaboration and a simplified approach to common challenges, we will be able to broaden the adoption of IT across the entire health care ecosystem and pass on a stronger, healthier, more viable health care system for future American generations.”

In addition to Tippett, a full slate of Verizon health IT experts will deliver insightful and timely addresses to HIMSS attendees, exploring a wide range of topics:

  • “From Telehealth to Wellness Management” Nancy Green, managing principal, telehealth Monday (Feb. 21) at 4:30 p.m., Mobility & Wireless Theater, Booth #685
  • “Connecting the Entire Healthcare Ecosystem” Gerard Grundler, managing principal, health information management Tuesday (Feb. 22) at 10:15 a.m., Interoperability Theater
  • “Leverage Technology to Share Patient Information and Achieve Meaningful Use” Kannan Sreedhar, managing director, health care practice Tuesday (Feb. 22) at 12 p.m., EHR/EMR Theater, Booth #263
  • “The Predictive Power of Healthcare Information” Gerard Grundler, managing principal, health information management Tuesday (Feb. 22) at 3:15 p.m., New Solutions at HIMSS, Booth #485
  • “Identity and Security Best Practices for the Healthcare Ecosystem” Ash Evans, strategist, universal identity services Wednesday (Feb. 23) at 11 a.m., Privacy & Security Theater, Booth #231

Verizon is also featured at the HIMSS Interoperability Pavilion. The company will demonstrate the Verizon Medical Data Exchange, a fully interoperable and open standards-based platform that links disparate IT systems and applications to enable health care providers to securely and privately receive and send digital records, such as dictated physician notes, X-rays, medical images and lab results.

Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions, the company’s health care practice group, offers a comprehensive portfolio of managed, IT and consulting services for the health care industry to help transform patient care delivery, enhance access to care and better manage costs.
