GENBAND Introduces Mobile Edge Optimization Suite for Relieving Smartphone Signaling Overload, RAN Congestion

Increases Traffic & Policy Management suite’s throughput to highest level in industry, adds support for IPv6

Barcelona, Feb. 14, 2011
– GENBAND, a leading developer of IP infrastructure and application solutions, today announced the GENBAND Mobile Edge Optimization Suite as an enhancement to the P Series of Traffic and Policy Management (TPM) Solutions. With today’s mobile networks dominated by smartphones, tablets, laptops and other data-capable devices, increasingly heavy demand is placed on mobile packet data networks. To address this trend, GENBAND has introduced the P Series Mobile Edge Optimization Suite to more intelligently manage network traffic by relieving signaling overload caused by smart devices and mobile data congestion in the Radio Access Network (RAN). GENBAND also today announced a significant increase in throughput capabilities and support for IPv6 across its GENBAND P Series portfolio of TPM solutions.

“Our Mobile Edge Optimization Suite enables service providers to accurately identify and characterize mobile devices with potential signaling overload behavior,” said Natasha Tamaskar, Vice President of Product Marketing, GENBAND. “Through a more intuitive and nuanced TPM approach, we can significantly reduce CapEx/OpEx for core network elements, increase network robustness and improve the quality of experience for users. Additionally, we’re pleased to deliver the industry’s highest TPM throughput in one chassis along with support for IPv6 networks, which is central to several next generation networking standards and essential considering the depletion of IPv4 addresses.”
Deployed in the RAN to identify overloaded cell sites and alleviate traffic congestion, the GENBAND P Series Mobile Edge Optimization solution is transparent to Radio Network Controllers (RNCs) and Service Gateway Support Nodes (SGSNs). This solution permits plug-and-play deployment for minimal operator provisioning.

“Mobile broadband traffic generated by smartphones and dongles continue to strain network resources, and as demand for bandwidth-hungry applications such as streaming video and online gaming continues, both the radio access and the signaling networks will continue to feel the pain,” said Shira Levine, Directing Analyst, Next Gen OSS and Policy at Infonetics Research. “This phenomenon is driving the need for traffic and policy management solutions that can handle both RAN utilization and signaling traffic on a dynamic basis, allowing the operator to better manage network utilization and optimize the customer experience.”

GENBAND’s flagship member of the P Series portfolio, the P80, has been enhanced to support up to 120 Gbps throughput through new state-of-the-art ATCA-based processing blades, making it the highest throughput solution on the market. New configurations for the P10 provide a three-fold throughput capacity increase of 30 Gbps for managing ever-increasing mobile data traffic while enjoying a compact appliance form factor.

GENBAND is supporting IPv6 across the entire P Series product line. For existing units, no hardware upgrade is required.
