Ciena CEO Gary B. Smith Appointed to National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee

LINTHICUM, Md. — 01/26/2011

Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings), the network specialist, today announced that President Obama has appointed Gary B. Smith, Ciena’s president and CEO, as a member of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC), effective as of January 7, 2011.  Mr. Smith joins an elite group of industry leaders from major telecommunications companies, network service providers and information technology, finance and aerospace companies, whose mission is to provide the President collaborative advice and expertise regarding telecommunications national security and emergency preparedness issues.

Mr. Smith joined Ciena in 1997 and has served as president and CEO since May 2001. He has served on Ciena’s Board of Directors since October 2000.
