Venture Communications Deploys BTI Systems’ Packet Optical Transport for Next Generation Service Delivery

Upgrades from SONET to Ethernet Transport Network, Scales Existing Fiber with DWDM

OTTAWA — Monday, October 18, 2010 // BTI Systems, the company that redefines metro service delivery, today announced that Venture Communications Cooperative of Highmore, South Dakota has deployed its integrated Layer 2 Ethernet and DWDM networking platform to deliver new revenue generating services to its residential and business customers. BTI Systems enables an Independent Operating Company (IOC) like Venture to cost-effectively upgrade its existing transport from 2.5G OC-48 SONET to a 10G Layer 2 Ethernet while scaling the capacity of its existing fiber up to 320G/400G with integrated DWDM. As a result, Venture now has the capability and capacity to reliably deliver services such as existing voice and high-speed internet as well as new IPTV and Ethernet Business Services while also being ready to offer additional services in the future.

“By deploying BTI’s packetVX™ Layer 2 Ethernet Switch and 32/40 channel DWDM system, we are laying a solid foundation for a simplified high-capacity infrastructure that can be scaled and managed easily,” said Randy Olson, Assistant General Manager, Venture Communications. ”After reviewing all of our options and completing a competitive RFP with a respected consulting engineering firm we found that no other technology alternative or vendor conserved and scaled our fiber, maintained our SONET or enabled Venture to increase the capacity of our existing fiber by a factor of 128x. BTI’s solution feels and acts like the SONET network that we’ve had for 20 years, but it delivers the flexibility of Ethernet and the scalability of DWDM so that we can confidently serve our customers and maximize the efficiency and simplicity of our network for the next 20 years.”

Offering bandwidth hungry services like IPTV or HDTV is difficult on legacy, limited capacity 2.5G SONET OC-48 networks. Additionally, IOC’s are already experiencing new, large bandwidth requirements from end customers driving Over-the-Top (OTT) Internet video traffic that that they do not offer or control. To meet their customer demands, Venture evaluated many 10G technological options including upgrades on SONET or FTTH or stand-alone Ethernet Switches. Venture chose BTI’s approach because it offers 10G today while delivering modular pay-as-you-grow scalability from 10G to multiple 10Gs in the future without requiring complex overlay networks, new fibre or forklift upgrades.

“Many IOCs have evolved their access networks every few years, and many have multiple access vendors and technologies. BTI is proud to partner with an innovative IOC like Venture to provide a purpose built and dedicated packet optical network that solves today’s problems and enables tomorrow’s opportunities without having to replace or reconfigure their core transport every time their access changes ”, said Brandon Sigmund, P.E Sales Engineer, BTI Systems. “Access and transport should be separated to allow the access side to evolve and change without negatively impacting core network reliability, complexity or scalability.”
