GlobeNet Announces Successful Trial with Xtera’s 40G Solution On Its Submarine Cable Network and Awards Xtera a 100G Network Upgrade Contract

DALLAS, TEXAS – (October 26, 2010) – GlobeNet, an international wholesale provider of submarine capacity, announced today the successful conclusion of a trial of 40 Gbps optical transmission technology on the most demanding segments of its submarine cable network and the award of a 100 Gbps Network Upgrade Contract to Xtera Communications, Inc. The trial was performed using Xtera’s 40 Gbps Polarization Multiplexed DPSK technology and confirms that GlobeNet’s network, originally designed for 320 Gbps per fiber pair, is capable of being upgraded to 1.44 Terabytes per fiber pair – more than four times the original design.

“For GlobeNet, this trial assures that our cable system is capable of supporting the explosive growth of innovative, Internet-based products and services in the Latin American Market,” said Erick W. Contag, chief operating officer of GlobeNet.

“GlobeNet continues to see robust growth driven by end user demand in South America and in order to be responsive to our customers we are awarding Xtera an upgrade contract for 100 Gbps of network capacity to be deployed immediately,” added Luiz Mario Alonso, GlobeNet’s Director of Network Engineering and Operations.  GlobeNet’s network provides the most advanced, fully redundant network linking North and South America. In 2009, GlobeNet upgraded a segment of its network with Xtera’s NXT 20 Gbps Differential Phase Shift Key (DPSK) technology.

“Xtera’s 40G solution is an evolution of our existing field proven 20G design with Dual Polarization Multiplexing, and this trial allows us to demonstrate that we can track and separate polarizations after long distances. The trial’s success validates our 40G solution,” said Jon Hopper, president and chief executive officer of Xtera. The trial further reinforces Xtera’s leadership in developing high bandwidth technology for submarine network upgrades.
