TelecityGroup hosts Milan Internet Exchange

Growing Italian digital economy to be supported by Italy’s biggest Internet Exchange

TelecityGroup and the Milan Internet Exchange (MIX), have today announced a new partnership which will result in a MIX point of presence (PoP) opening in TelecityGroup’s new Basiglio data centre in Milan, Italy. The agreement will enable MIX to increase its coverage throughout Milan as part of an ongoing project to boost the integration of new members to the Exchange, and create new internet peering opportunities for the Internet Service Providers (ISPs), web hosting companies and content providers that are already connected to its network.

TelecityGroup has been chosen to host MIX in order to provide the resilience and capacity to support ever increasing internet traffic in Italy. The presence of MIX at TelecityGroup’s new data centre will provide TelecityGroup customers with a high level of peering and connectivity options both across Italy and internationally.

MIX was founded in 2000 and has since become the largest Internet Exchange (IXP) in Italy, supporting the interconnection of Italian and international ISPs and other companies in the digital economy such as content providers, broadcasters and web hosting companies. Italy has one of Europe’s fastest growing internet markets in Europe* , the percentage of the total population using the internet has grown from 22.8 percent in 2000 to 51.7 percent in 2010, and in June 2010 MIX recorded a new peak traffic record of 61GB per second.

Luca Beltramino, Country Manager Italy, TelecityGroup comments: “Internet usage in Italy is growing exponentially, due in no small part to the role MIX has played improving the peering and interconnecting environment for network operators and bandwidth-hungry organisations in the country.  Our highly connected carrier neutral data centres are positioned at the heart of Italy’s rapidly expanding digital economy so this makes for an ideal, mutually beneficial partnership. We’re delighted MIX has recognised the premium standard of our facilities and we look forward to supporting its continued growth.”

Valeria Rossi, MIX Managing Director, says: “MIX’s mission is to improve the interconnection between all players in the digital economy, improving the end users’ internet experience in terms of fast access to content, while increasing overall reliability by adding new interconnection routes between networks. The agreement with TelecityGroup is a significant step in our ongoing project to distribute MIX PoPs across multiple, independent data centres in Milan. This project will strengthen MIX’s role as a leading Internet Exchange in Southern Europe, and as one of the key network infrastructure points where US and Northern European players meet Italian and Mediterranean operators. At the same time, together with the fully owned and managed data centre where the MIX core is located, these newly distributed PoPs will position MIX’s infrastructure amongst the most reliable and advanced IXPs across the world.

Alongside MIX, TelecityGroup hosts major IXPs across its European data centre estate, including four of the busiest European IXPs: AMS-IX in Amsterdam; LINX in London, DE-CIX in Frankfurt and Netnod in Stockholm. It is also a patron of Euro-IX, an association of European Internet Exchanges that represents over 40 affiliated Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and over 2,500 of their service provider customers.

MIX has nearly doubled its traffic during the past 12 months, and has now more than 86 members connected to its peering infrastructure. More than 28 long distance carrier networks provide data transport facilities towards MIX locations in Milan.  MIX is a Euro-IX founder member and hosts one of the Italian Government Network PoPs, the SPC.
