Las Vegas High School Students Receive CenturyLink Scholarships

LAS VEGAS – Continuing its dedication to education in Southern Nevada, CenturyLink announced today that it has awarded two high school students $1,000 annual scholarships renewable for four years as long as the students maintain a 3.0 grade point average at an accredited institution of higher education.

The scholarships were presented to College of Southern Nevada High School East Campus graduate Patricia Kennedy and Spring Valley High School graduate Trey Whitley. They were chosen as part of a group of 42 honorees that were descendents of employees and maintained at least a 3.0 average in high school.

Kennedy graduated with two diplomas – an honors high school diploma and an honors Associate of Arts degree in Philosophy degree from the College of Southern Nevada which she was attending concurrently with high school. At times, she managed up to 19 college credits in addition to her high school classes. She plans to attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas and study Philosophy. She will spend her first semester abroad in Viterbo, Italy and plans to become a lawyer.

Whitley achieved a 3.9 grade point average and was awarded an honors diploma from Spring Valley High School. During his high school tenure, he was involved in three different sports – basketball, football and volleyball – and played cello in the orchestra. He also was awarded the Academic Achievement Award from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He plans to stay in town and be a Rebel, using his Millennium Scholarship to study political science. Law is also in his future plans and his ultimate goal is to become a sports lawyer.

“We are happy to provide scholarships for some very bright local students to attend college and pursue their career dreams,” said Jeff Oberschelp, CenturyLink Vice President and General Manager. “By promoting education we are planting the seeds in hope that these future UNLV students will stay in Las Vegas and make a difference in our community after graduation.”
