Level 3 Wins Bigpoint GmbH Online Game Delivery

Largest German Online Games Developer/Publisher Selects Level 3 for CDN, Caching Services

LONDON, Jun 23, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced it has been selected by Bigpoint GmbH, a worldwide leader in browser-based online games, to deliver content delivery network (CDN) and caching services to support multiple titles within Bigpoint’s browser games catalog.

With more than 125 million registrations worldwide, Bigpoint is currently the largest gaming portal in Germany and one of the fastest-growing gaming portal websites in Europe. The company acts as a developer, operator and publisher of browser-based online games and provides game content for media partners around the world. Level 3 is providing CDN and caching services for Bigpoint for multiple titles in both Europe and the U.S.

“With new locations in Berlin and San Francisco, in addition to our Malta offices and our headquarters in Hamburg, this is a big expansion year for Bigpoint, and so it became critical to enlist a CDN provider with the ability to easily scale to support our growth,” said Dr. Jan Wergin, chief technology officer with BigPoint. “Level 3 has both the expansive IP network and advanced CDN we need to help ensure a high-quality game playing experience for our users.”

Bigpoint’s game portal has been translated into several languages, and the company’s most popular games are currently played in a number of countries around the world. Bigpoint operates an essentially free game-playing structure, with options available for purchasing “goods” and premium subscriptions within many games. With this largely open model for game-play and a consistently updated catalog of games, the company has experienced significant growth since opening its portal in December 2006.

Whether just a few or hundreds of thousands of users are playing one of these games at once, Level 3’s CDN services are designed to support a quality game-playing experience – offering fast, reliable downloads and patches, intelligent traffic management and metrics that inform smart decisions for developers and publishers.

“With Level 3, Bigpoint has access to a team of experts in online media delivery who understand the particular challenges that come with successful online game delivery, such as the importance of download speed and network fault-tolerance,” said James Heard, president of European Markets at Level 3. “Leveraging the Level 3 CDN and caching services, Bigpoint can provide end-users with reliable access to its digital games content backed by one of the world’s largest Tier 1 IP backbones.”
