Global Crossing Delivers Reliability for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP with Scalable, Converged MPLS Network

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced it is providing a fully redundant, global Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network to Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, a leading international law firm.  The three-year contract for these services will deliver network reliability among the firm’s offices in the United States and around the world, including Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Moscow; London, and Beijing, as well as its recently acquired offices in Geneva, Switzerland.

Akin Gump chose Global Crossing over several competitors and incumbent service providers to consolidate their telecommunications services.  The MPLS network will provide highly reliable, fully redundant, highly scalable, flexible capabilities on a single network management system.  It will enable Akin Gump to take advantage of national Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and global converged IP networking solutions, such as audio conferencing and data center connectivity.  The Global Crossing solutions also include its Network Integrity and Applications Integrity services, which provide network monitoring, analysis and control capabilities.

Through its global network of offices, Akin Gump advises leading enterprises in a wide variety of industries, including communications and technology, mining, minerals and energy, and consumer goods and services on matters involving policy, trade, dispute resolution, transactions and project development activities in mature and emerging markets.

“Global Crossing’s IP and networking solutions are improving our ability to easily, seamlessly and reliably communicate among our offices to address the array of legal challenges our clients may encounter in achieving their business goals,” said Lorey Arthur Hoffman, CIO of Akin Gump.  “Their VoIP On-Net Plus™ solution is providing us a pathway to future technology, such as SIP trunking, which may help us reduce costs and improve the efficiency of our business.  As we continue to upgrade our global converged IP telephony and MPLS networking infrastructure, we’re confident Global Crossing’s solutions will address the needs of our growing global business.”

“We’re excited about supporting Akin Gump’s internationally renowned law business,” said Neil Barua, Global Crossing’s managing director for North America.  “Global Crossing’s underlying converged MPLS solutions are helping them deliver their comprehensive suite of services to their global and local clients.”

Global Crossing’s global, fully meshed MPLS-based network ensures that VoIP calls are delivered with minimal latency, packet loss and jitter — a consistent and predictable call quality not possible with voice services based on public Internet transport.

Global Crossing’s VoIP On-Net Plus™ is a cloud-based dial plan solution connecting enterprise locations worldwide on the Global Crossing network via a dedicated facility.  Companies can send IP- or Time Division Multiplexed (TDM)-originated voice traffic for on-net completion using corporate-defined dial plans without traditional or international long distance charges.  Customers benefit from a central dial plan hosted in Global Crossing’s network versus a premises-based dial plan by managing changes centrally via uCommand, Global Crossing’s web-based portal.

Customers also can use the same connection for off-net call completions to the public switched telephone network using Global Crossing’s VoIP Outbound™ service.  Global Crossing’s VoIP Outbound service accepts enterprise outbound IP voice traffic for national long distance and international long distance calling that can terminate to more than 240 countries worldwide.  The IP voice traffic is transported across Global Crossing’s private VoIP platform for completion via the local public switched telephone network. VoIP Outbound can be provisioned with a fully managed router solution.

Global Crossing’s Network Integrity Services add sophisticated software tools to the company’s IP VPN service to simplify network monitoring and control.  It removes the complexities of monitoring the entire network by collecting and filtering port and circuit information.  Data is displayed in a simple, incisive format, enabling customers to immediately identify trouble areas or potential conditions that may put their critical network resources and, ultimately, business in jeopardy.

Global Crossing Applications Integrity Service provides near real-time information for live monitoring and historical data for analysis and reporting on all network traffic end to end, including advanced statistics on latency, jitter and packet loss, as well as general utilization. It is especially useful to enterprises that are rapidly deploying VoIP, video, CRM and ERP on their networks.  When these latency-intolerant applications share converged networks with other applications, particularly those with high bandwidth utilization, the need for application-level performance monitoring and reporting quickly becomes apparent to both network managers and end users.  Capturing application-specific performance data is crucial for measuring compliance with Service Level Agreements in support of VoIP, video and other services with critical Class of Service (CoS) requirements.
