Partnership delivers live video streaming worldwide thanks to 65,000-strong global server network & advanced online live streaming technology

SYDNEY, Aust., – May 18, 2010 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings), the leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, and Viocorp, Australia’s leading software company specialising in online video streaming, today announced their official sponsorship of the inaugural, large scale, independent TED event in Australia, TEDxSydney. TEDxSydney by General Thinking, hosted at CarriageWorks in Redfern, will take place on Saturday May 22, 2010.

TEDx is a program of independent, self-organised speaker events, which take place around the world. TEDx events are linked to TED, a US based not-for-profit enterprise devoted to ideas worth spreading about Technology, Entertainment and Design. The TEDxSydney speakers will deliver a presentation in under 18 minutes to an exclusive, invitation-only audience in the CarriageWorks auditorium.

TEDxSydney received thousands of online registrations for a seat in the auditorium, well in excess of the venue’s capacity which can only seat 700 people. In collaboration with Viocorp, Akamai will support TEDxSydney by streaming live video content from local speakers to the public in the foyer of Carriageworks. Akamai and Viocorp will also stream speeches live over the Internet via the TEDxSydney.com website.

Taking the live video feeds directly from the event, Viocorp will run the video feeds through its live streaming equipment to seamlessly broadcast the content online, enabling individuals and self-organised groups located throughout Australia and across the world to consume and engage with the content from TEDxSydney. Hundreds of thousands of people will be able watch the speeches thanks to Akamai’s live content delivery network and Viocorp’s live streaming technology.“Akamai has a long-standing relationship with TED, so we naturally wanted to support this exciting first TEDx event in Sydney. The Internet is the best vehicle to reach millions of people around the world, and Akamai’s technology makes it possible. Our network is designed to handle high peak loads and minimise downtime, so fans worldwide can still watch the speeches in real-time if they aren’t lucky enough to be in the auditorium itself,” said Ian Teague, ANZ country manager at Akamai.

“TEDxSydney is set to be a signifcant event, with some of Australia’s greatest minds sharing their thoughts on stage. Streaming the content over the Web is a vital part of TED events and it’s equally important to be able to rely on trusted technology partners like Akamai to deliver seamless footage on the day and afterwards,” added Remo Giuffre, organiser of TEDxSydney.

Ian Gardiner, Chief Executive Officer, Viocorp continued, “We are delighted to be partnering with TEDxSydney. We have a rich heritage in delivering live event webcasts and we are excited to be leveraging our expertise to enable individual Australians and people across the world to engage with the ideas and unique performances from Australia’s leading visionaries and storytellers.”

Akamai will leverage its 65,000-strong global server network to deliver the video content from the event. The company’s content network will handle significant peak loads to support the demand for footage of the event. As a long-term TED partner to provide back-end support, Akamai’s rich media and enterprise applications enable TED to stream more than 400 videos over the Internet, as well as live-streamed conference events.

About TED
TED is a US based not-for-profit enterprise devoted to the propagation of Ideas Worth Spreading. TED started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment & Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK, TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the new TEDx community program, this year’s TEDIndia Conference and the annual TED Prize. The annual conferences in Long Beach and Oxford bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in exactly 18 minutes.
